Dr. Kimryn Rathmell

An alumnus of the University of Northern Iowa, Kimryn Rathmell, MD, PhD, MMHC, was sworn in as the 17th NCI director on December 18, 2023. She previously led the Vanderbilt University Medical Center as physician-in-chief and chair of the Department of Medicine.

Dr. Rathmell is part of President Biden’s Cancer Panel and leads NCI in their efforts towards achieving the goals of the Cancer Moonshot: To prevent more than 4 million cancer deaths by 2047 and to improve the experience of people who are touched by cancer.

Dr. Robert Smith
Senior Vice President of Early Cancer Detection Science
American Cancer Society

Robert A. Smith, PhD, is a cancer epidemiologist and senior vice president of Early Cancer Detection Science for the American Cancer Society (ACS). For most of his tenure at the ACS, he has led the development of cancer screening guidelines and been active in research on the effectiveness of cancer screening, utilization of cancer screening, improving the quality of cancer screening, and new cancer screening technology.

Smith and his team focus on ensuring that ACS cancer screening guidelines rely on scientific evidence, meet high international standards of quality, and have the potential and aim to significantly reduce the burden of cancer. They also track technical advances in screening technology and new approaches to early cancer detection so that the ACS can provide guidance on these new tests to clinicians and the public.

Following the Summit, join Iowa lawmakers and American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) staff, board members, and volunteers as they discuss ACS CAN’s policy priorities for the upcoming 2025 Iowa legislative session.
