Karen Packer Spirit of Collaboration Award

(Nominations accepted through August 13.)

The Karen Packer Spirit of Collaboration Award honors an Iowan with an outstanding commitment to collaborative cancer control efforts in Iowa. The recipient must be a member of the Iowa Cancer Consortium.

This award is named for Karen Packer who was a long-time Consortium member. Karen’s commitment to reducing the burden of cancer ranged from a personal level to a national level. She cared for three family members diagnosed with cancer. In Marshalltown, her local community, she was a pivotal force in establishing and maintaining the Marshalltown Patient Resource Center as well as running prostate cancer and breast cancer support groups. At a state and national level she worked with a variety of organizations including the Consortium, National Cancer Institute, American Cancer Society, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, American Brain Tumor Association, Y-ME, US Too, and the National Coalition of Cancer Survivors. Karen passed away on June 5th, 2007 after her own battle with stomach cancer. Her spirit lives on in each Consortium member as we make efforts on behalf of the cancer community.
